Large MySQL database restore - server timing out?

When importing large MySQL databases (several megabytes of data) the server often times out, this is due to PHP mysql.connect_timeout being set low on shared servers and it drops the session before the import ends (booo).

There is a great AJAX solution from Alexey Ozerov:
BigDump (you just gotta love the name!) download from here:
http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.php

He says just FTP the SQL backup file to your server but fails to properly describe how to use it with the file you have transferred to your server.
Try this:
FTP BigDump.php and the SQL backup file to your server into the same folder, then open BigDump in your browser. Now you should see a link "Start Import", click this and it should start its restore.... [if not then sorry you are on your own, or contact http://www.ozerov.de/bigdump.php ]

The same issues with timeouts can occur when exporting! This is addressed here:

Hope you find this as helpful as I have! ;-)

Dave.
